New Virtual platform Launched for UAE Jobs

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has launched a new virtual labour market platform that will allow job seekers inside and outside of UAE to create profiles as well as search for vacancies on the ministry's website: careers.mohre.gov.ae. 

Ayesha Mohammed Ahmed Belharfia, Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs, said that the new virtual labour market in its new edition is a tool that uses artificial intelligence to help all job seekers find opportunities announced by companies.

The AI system helps in matching the right applicants with what recruiters are searching for.

She added that launching the platform comes as a part of the ministry's desire to provide authentic recruiting services via an official platform that guarantees the security and privacy of applicants' data under the supervision of the ministry.

Belharfia said that the platform is user-friendly, as the AI guided services facilitate the user's journey from the moment he enters that platform until he finishes his profile and start looking for suitable opportunities.

She called on job seekers to register on the virtual labour market, thus benefiting from the employment services provided for employers and employees.

LTI to Hire 3,800 Freshers as it sees Order-book swelling this year

Engineering major L&T's software arm LTI will be hiring around 3,800 freshers this fiscal as it expects the business to grow at a faster clip, a top official has said. The company is working at a very high utilisation level now and wants to hire more to get down the level, chief executive Sanjay Jalona said.

"We will be hiring 3,700-3,800 freshers this fiscal year as against the 3,000 freshers we hired in FY19," he told PTI. Additionally, it will also hire laterally as well as per project requirements on a "just-in-time" basis, he said.

Asked whether the necessary talent is available on call, especially given the fact that a lot many companies are depending on the just-in-time hiring model, Jalona said talent is the biggest issue which keeps him awake and the concerns have only aggravated lately.

However, industry executives keep expressing concerns over the quality of the manpower available and doubt their skillsets are enough for a dynamically changing industry. In the year to March 2019, Jalona said LTI has hired over 4,000 people on a net basis, of which 656 were in the fourth quarter alone.

The utilisation rates including trainees had stood at over 82 per cent, and the company decided to ramp up hiring, even at the cost of compromising the margin, Jalona said. The high utilisation is very "unhealthy" for a company of its size which is growing, he added.

LTI reported a 31 per cent growth in March quarter net at Rs 378.5 crore on a faster revenue accretion. Overall revenue grew 29.3 per cent during the fiscal to Rs 9,445 crore.

Jalona said the demand environment is healthy for FY20 as the average contracted value during the quarter stood at a healthy USD 100 million per client.

Arabic audiobook start-up to Create over 5,000 Jobs for Content creators

Swedish start-up Kitab Sawti, which claims to be the world’s largest Arabic audiobook platform, has raised $6 million in Series A funding, which it will use to expand its content and reach and create over 5,000 jobs for content creators and narrators by 2021.

The platform was founded in Sweden in 2016 to support the integration Syrian refugee kids into Swedish society and today has over 2,000 audiobooks and more than 1 million registered users from which it has seen 20% monthly growth in paying users.

With offices in Dubai, Cairo and Palestine, some of its new investors include Bonnier Ventures, the venture capital arm of renowned publisher Bonnier, Paltel Group, a public shareholding company with a significant market share in Palestine’s telecommunication sector, and Kaaf Investments, a Dubai-based family investment firm.

Kitab Sawti has also attracted additional investment from Careem co-founder Abdulla Elyas and venture capital firm Northzone, known for being one of the first investors in Spotify.

Sebastian Bond, founder and CEO of Kitab Sawti said the success of the Series A funding round is “a testament to the platform’s growth potential, particularly coming from established venture capitalists and investors who have scaled global billion-dollar businesses before.”

“We have witnessed growing consumption of our content over the past period, with more than 1 million registered users and a 20% month-on-month growth in paying users. The next 12 to 18 months will be very exciting for us as we deploy the funds to bolster the platform’s leading position in the Arabic audiobook industry, supporting more than 5,000 new jobs in the industry in the process,” he said.

Careem co-founder Abdulla Elyas said Kitab Sawti is “riding the wave of a global growth trend witnessed in the audiobook industry.”

“I believed in the business and its purpose early on and I continue to support it in a bid to inspire more entrepreneurs to follow their dreams and develop businesses that have a positive socio-economic impact in our region. Preserving the Arabic language and nurturing a culture of self-education in our region are both critical needs that I am confident Kitab Sawti will help to address,” he added.

Ulrika Saxon, CEO at Bonnier Ventures said the firm sees “huge opportunities” in audio and podcasting and the Kitab Sawti team “really impressed” with their ambition and progress.
