You have probably been on a job hunt for months now. You’ve revamped your LinkedIn profile, polished your CV and brushed up on interview etiquette.
However, all that effort might be futile in the end if you just don’t fit into what most employers are looking for.
According to a new research, companies in the UAE are on the lookout for certain personality traits, skills and qualifications when hiring a new employee.
The most in demand these days are those who have strong evidence that shows they are team players, can speak English and Arabic and can demonstrate grace under pressure.
“The most desired skill by UAE companies is the ability to work well in a team,” according to a recruitment specialist.
In a survey among 1,232 respondents including managers and senior officials in various organisations in the UAE and other parts of the Middle East and North Africa (Mena), about half (49 per cent) said their company values candidates who are “team players”.
Good communication skills in Arabic and English, efficiency and productivity and leadership, are also highly valued skills for 46 per cent, 41 per cent and 40 per cent of UAE working respondents, respectively.
Good communications skills in English only and the ability to work well under pressure both follow at 39 per cent.
When looking at the qualifications of candidates, almost a third (27 per cent) are most likely to lean towards applicants with graduate/post graduate degrees in Business Management, Commerce and Engineering.
In terms of specific roles and experience, employers are seeking candidates with experience in managing a team (39 per cent) and those with mid-level or three to seven years’ experience (31 per cent).
Those in sales and marketing and engineering are preferred by 28 per cent of the respondents.
“It is interesting to see the most popular job roles in the UAE have changed since our last survey in July, indicating the fluidity of the UAE market when it comes to employment options,” said Elissavet Vraka, research manager at YouGov, which conducted the study in cooperation with Bayt.com.
As to which industries are most likely to hire new staff, those in the construction (40 per cent), banking/finance (34 per cent), tourism/hospitality (31 per cent) and recreation/entertainment (30 per cent) are attracting the top talent.
Responses in the Middle East Job Index Survey was collected online between December 8, 2015 and January 21, 2016. Almost a quarter (23 per cent) of those who participated in the survey are junior managers/team leaders, 22 per cent are middle managers and 12 per cent are directors or senior managers.
